The casino
During a Frank Zappa concert in 1971, the original Montreux casino caught fire and burned down. Deep Purple, watching from across the water, turned the scene into “Smoke on the Water”. The casino was rebuilt on the same lakeside spot.
Where to stay
Montreux’s grand hotels line the lakeside promenade; ask for a lake-view room to wake up to the mountains across the water.
Beyond the tables
Follow the promenade to the medieval Chillon Castle, take a mountain railway up into the Alps, or plan around the Montreux Jazz Festival in July.
Getting there
Direct trains from Geneva Airport follow the lake to Montreux in just over an hour.
