The casino

Neutral Portugal drew exiles and agents during the Second World War, and Estoril was at the centre of it. Ian Fleming was here in 1941, and those weeks later shaped his first Bond novel, Casino Royale. Today the casino also hosts shows, restaurants and exhibitions.

Where to stay

The Palácio Estoril Hotel opened in 1930 next to the casino gardens. Fleming signed its register, and it later featured in the Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Beyond the tables

Stroll the seafront promenade to Cascais, tee off at one of the nearby golf courses, or ride the train into central Lisbon.

Getting there

Trains from Lisbon’s Cais do Sodré station run along the coast to Estoril, about 18 km away. Lisbon Airport is around 30–40 minutes by car.

Good to know: Visitors must be 18+ with photo ID. Smart casual dress is fine in most areas. Opening hours, entry fees and dress codes can change, so check the casino’s official website before you travel.
